Signal Operation by Solenoid
Whilst operation by the use of conventional point motors is perfectly possible, they do have their drawbacks. Notably size and power. They are quite bulky and are can quite easily be over-powerful for signals, which should not require much power to operate.
It is relatively easy to make a simple solenoid, just use Google to see how easy and suitable wire is available from such as Scientific Wire. However if you only need a few then it’s probably cheaper to buy them ready-made. Mine work best on 9vdc, though up to 12vdc can be used.
I have gone back to first principles and developed a simple, compact low-power solenoid for use with signals, which are much gently and have the additional advantage of being almost totally silent in operation and won’t wreck your signals.
They include a crank for ease of adjustment .
